I love listening to npr in the afternoons. I've been picking up this little girl from school @ 3:45 everyday for the last few months and Fresh Ari - an npr program - comes on during that time. Some times the people they are talking to aren't really that interesting to me, I could really care less about the topic. Then others I can't get enough, very interesting, so much so that I don't want to get out of the car and go in to pick up the little girl! Today was one of those. Today on npr, on Fresh Air, they were talking to a guy who is a defense attorney for death row inmates. . . . . he's written a book about his last 20yr of doing this.
With that in mind, I should probably say that Mark really enjoys watching shows on Discovery, or MSNBC, about prison and life there, and that people who fill those walls. Me, I don't really care too, I mean, I guess its interesting, but not really my first of second or third choices. My dad also worked for a time w/ a prison ministry when I was growing up, so I guess maybe my back ground knowledge of prison life could be better than others . . . . I thought I knew how I felt about people on death row, I thought my 'knowledge' of the subjects was enough. Come to find out, I'm not as set in my opinion as I thought.
I put the link to this interview in here, I hope that you check it out - its not morbid, its not graphic, its not that hard to listen to. But getting a new view point - for myself - was huge, and the way that I feel about his matter has really changed, I know why. B/c I have heard from the other side, the side the defends people who have mad very bad, poor choices in their life. He says some very profound things, very thought provoking things. I'd love to hear what you think of this interview as well.
I heard that same interview. I thought it was really convicting, the part about even when the people he's defending seem evil, they still deserve to be treated with the same constitutional rights as everyone else. He focuses on the American Judicial system and constitutional rights but I thought it was easy to see the social justice Christian side of everyone deserving value because of Jesus. Thanks for reminding me of that interview. I recommend people listen too. You'll hear a man who is tired and heartbroken but doing good work.
ReplyDeleteThats what it was - his pursuit of justice, and willingness to keep on w/ something that is so hard to do. Thanks for the comment!
