I think making a conscious decision to choose a mindset that might be a little harder to concur can be a huge hurdle, and a Huge reward. The fact that Joy is a choice we make and Happiness if just an emotion says a lot. If we want Joy in our life we have to Choose it - Happiness will come and go.
I know I've said on here before that I struggle with holding on to hurts and allowing that pain and frustration to develop into bitterness. Sometimes it can be - as twisted as it sounds - enjoyable to roll over and over in the hurt and pain someone might have caused you. I know I'm not the only one. . . . I'm also sure that we have all heard that the only ones we are hurting, or 'getting back at' are ourselves.
And even though it's very counter productive how do we end up back on the marry go round of punishing ourselves?
As good as I am with constantly playing tug of war with myself to choose to forgive and choosing to hand my issues and hurt over to God, I know that the end result can be freedom! It can be peace and more Joy!
Joy is a Choice - a daily, hourly, minuet by minuet choice we have to make. When we make that choice to be joyful we are choosing to find our worth and identity in Christ - our source of Joy. We are choosing to accept Him and His ways for our life.
Seems to me - and in my experiences - that choosing to be joyful and seek God for comfort and forgiveness towards those who have hurt me is a much better road to take. Its freeing. Cast your cares on Him - He is able to take care of it! It is also more enjoyable to live a life of Joy than just an average joyless life.
Ps 55:22 NLT 'Give your burdens to the Lord, and He will take care of you.. . '
Galatians 5:22 NLT 'But the holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: Love, JOY, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness and Self-control . . . .'
I don't know where you are, or what you are going through, but I know that I can always use more JOY and Kindness in my life towards others. Making a choice to be Joyful in every situation today - Who's with me?!
