An Add On

On Tuesday I had my first ever Guest Poster! My sister had the opportunity to be the first of what I hope will be many.
I wanted to add on a few of my own thoughts to her post about fasting. During this time of year, if your Christian, or Catholic, chances are pretty good your fasting from something during this season of Lent.

Most people - it seems - choose to give food up. Chocolate, Coffee, bread, meat. Some choose to give up social media or TV, like myself. I have give up my afternoon TV watching. Why? Because I can spend WAY TOO much time catching up on the DVR, or just vegging out.
The point, like Joanna posted about, is not just to give something up to have more time, or to fill it doing something else, but to spend that time w/ God. Be it reading, praying, meditating on His word, or worshiping with songs. The point to draw closer to Him.

On a personal note, my husband and I have fasted before making a big decisions. With the last couple of moves for us, there was lots of prayer and fasting that took place before we made an kind of decision. Fasting is a time to grow in your faith, seek the Lord for an answer or direction in your life, and to draw closer to Him. It might sound like a scary, big, very mature christian thing, but I don't think that's how God wants us to look at. Its a time to draw close to Him.

Your turn. Are you fasting this Lenten season, if so from what? How have you noticed your spiritual life changing/growing from this time? I'd love to hear, if your willing to share!

  1. I really appreciate these posts on fasting. Growing up I always perceived Lent as Catholic so didn't participate, but we had always fasted at other times similar to you and your family when making big decisions. In the past I've associate fasting with food, but with being pregnant then nursing I haven't since the beginning of 2009. Prior to being pregnant I did fast food, but lately have been thinking of fasting social media but with it being business for me I haven't taken that step. We've already got rid of cable and I barely watch TV (occasional Elmo with Nia!), but will be thinking of other things to fast in the future.
