In middle school and high school my dad was on this country music kick.
I hated it!
At that time I was more into likes of - at that time he was called P Diddy, Perl Jam, 3 Doors Down, Biggie, Radio Head, Gorillaz, Beastie Boys, and Nelly. I know a bit of a mix, but it was not country!
It was the worst if my dad was picking me up and of course we would listen to it until I couldn't handle it anymore! He would let me change it - probably just so he wouldn' have to listen to me go on and on about why I hated listening to it so much! - and the ride would be much more bearable. Later in high school, my boyfriend at that time had grown up on it. His mom loved it too so I was inundated with it. I couldn't get away from it, and of course - because I was 'in love' - I began to think it wasn't so bad.
Now I really enjoy it because I like it, and in my old age, I can't handle the lyrics of any other type of music. Too raunchy and dirty. My Pandora 'country' station is my go to most of the time. I love it! I live in the North East and I laugh because I thought country was a regional thing, not a state of mind thing! Thank goodness, there are country station here as well. And while I didn't grow up in the country on a farm, I did grow up at the beach, driven on the sand - after the black top ends - and with a slower pace of life that I find all country songs are talking about.
I like the stories of country music, I like the memories I've made and have from the times when I've been listening to it. I like how I'm transported home when I hear a song like Jamey Johnson's 'In Color' and I can hear and remember my Papa - the memories flood back, and most of the time so do tears. Or like when I hear anything by Kenny Chesney I remember my high school days and all the fun times I had then. I love the memory lane I get to go down and the new memories I create every time I listen.
So, what about you, popular bands/songs you grew up on. How has your music taste changed as you've grown, and whats your favorite genera?
