American Girl

As a girl I received this amazing magazine in the mail that became a thing a look forward to.

American Girl.
When I was about 8 I guess, I started getting this little wish list of a magazine. A piece of mail I'm sure my mother could have thrown out and never let me see - I'm not sure why she didn't. It was a magazine full of three dolls and all the accesories a girl and doll could ask for.

I had a friend, Sarah Cotton, who lived very close to me and she started a club. The American Girl Doll Club. I'm still not sure to this day how I ever was allowed entrance to this wonderful club, because I didn't have a doll. She must have had pity on me and just let me in. The club was all things American Girl and Doll related. I'm still friends with Sarah, only we don't meet up for doll club meeting anymore, maybe our girls will start to enjoy them they way we did though : )

My favorite doll was Samantha. They have sense put her in the 'vault' and is now a collectors item I would imagine. I don't know what I loved the most about her, maybe it was her story, maybe it was her pretty clothes, or her perfect black silky smooth hair. Whatever it was, I wanted her badly. I never did received her, but I did read all 6 of her books, and all the other girls books as well.

Kirsten,  Samantha, and Molly were the three original dolls. They all had 3 books, and from there, their series grew to 6 books each. They were fun books to read, and I loved them! I think they were the only books I read as a girl. . .  maybe not, but they were the only ones I remember reading and enjoying. As they started adding new dolls, I would gobble those stories up as well. Over the last 20 years, they have added, and 'retired' 17 dolls/stories!

A few years ago, I think Kaia was 1, she received her first American Girl Doll, and book series. I'm not sure who was more excited, me or her. I think I was! I can't wait to read to her and Olivia the books in hopes that they'll come to love and enjoy them as much as I did. The other day Kaia was looking through the catalog and asking me 'mommy, who's this? and who's this?' Seems like shes started to find her love for them already. . .

Do you have a favorite book series from your childhood? What about doll, or action thing? Are they still around?

  1. I got Molly, remember??? :) I don't know where she's at tho. Probably in the closet at Mom and Dads. I'm sure Kaia and Olivia will be asking for several of them in the coming years. I didn't know they retired 17 dolls!!!!!!!! My gracious!!!

  3. I ADORED American Girl and remember when it was named "Pleasant Company." I had Samantha and she was my favorite as well. She seemed so prim and proper (and type A like me!) so that's why I loved her so much. My sisters had Addy and Molly. What beautiful dolls! Now that I read this post it reminded me that my mom's been asking what to do with my Samantha since she relocated and is holding onto my childhood things still. Nia LOVES dolls (she plays with them at the nursery at church) and while I'm very strict about her only playing with gender neutral toys I think I'm going to have to make an exception and ask my mom to bring up Samantha when she comes to NYC for Christmas. Thank you for reminding me!

  4. Oh yes Quiana! you should, I'm sure little Nia will love her, and enjoy her just as much as you did - i'd wait a few years though before you head into that world completely. I'm not sure I want them to get sucked in to the material part of the dolls, but the stories and characters are something to be passed down for sure : )
