This year - as I did last year - I gave up Facebook for lent.
I remember having said 'I could never give fb up! I love it too much, and I'm on there all the time. I don't know what I'd do w/o fb!'
Of course I was half joking, half being serious. But it also seemed to be the thing that I NEEDED to give up for lent. If you think about it, shouldn't we be giving up things that mean a lot to us?
I have a friend who gives up coffee every year, I don't know how she does it! That really is something I could NEVER give up. But its not a walk in the park for her either - she goes through with draws and bad head aches.
But shouldn't we be giving up things that mean the most to us? Things that we will miss not having in our life for 6weeks?
I think it is. And yes, I have felt very disconnected from friends and - as sad as this sounds - family from not being on fb, but thats whats its about - right?
I know, I've still been on twitter, but for me the hardest part is not being in the loop of whats going on w/ others, which has helped in staying connected w/ people other than through fb.
So what big thing did you give up for lent? Is it just a little something that you miss, or a big something that you will really look forward to getting back when Easter comes?

Hi! Ironically I prayed about what to give up way back in early March and before I was even done with my prayer, fb popped in my head as the one thing that takes up more of my time and devotion than it should so I also gave that up. WOW has it been hard! Same as you I use it to keep in the loop of friends but also out of town family so it has been hard but I am in the Word and in prayer SO much more now and I am so thankful that God has used this time to realign how I use my time. Keep up the good work!!
ReplyDeleteWe are trying to come back East mid July-beg of Aug and are hoping to hit the big Apple to show the kids the statue, central park (where Paul proposed to me 10 years ago) and a few other spots. If we are there on a weekend/Sunday I am going to get in touch for details on your church so we can come to it.
ttys (encouraging to know there are others fb fasting. It has been liberating! True confessions: I feel like the first 2 weeks of withdrawal I was living my life in "status update format" as if my brain was missing the updating. LOL
Uh-oh... I gave up nothing. :(
ReplyDeleteI have only observed Lent once in my life - two years ago - and I can honestly say that it brought me right to the feet of God.
Terri your not alone! It is a great feeling to know that you can do it - and when you get back on you'll find it not as interesting and addicting as before lent. That was true for me last year anyway. your not along, and good for you, keep up the good work!
ReplyDeleteAlecia you can still get in - giving something up - its never to late :) hehe
I gave up facebook this year too!! I've been so busy with our school's musical that I haven't really paid much attention. But as far as keeping in touch with Andrew, my oldest brother on deployment, I've been suffering : ( But I do not miss it for the most part. I just miss out on staying connected with the very distant relatives who live in other countries!! It is a nice break though from the world. Also, my cell phone just broke a few days ago so I have really been feeling disconnected but it isn't all that bad. Believe it or not I'm surviving! Haha! Have a great week Rebecca!!
ReplyDeleteThats great Natalie! Good for you : ) hope you have a wonderful week too
