Growing up on the coast of NC I went
through several hurricanes and tropical storms. Most of them we rode
out, and stayed in our house. There was only one I remember leaving for -
Fran.
This storm was HUGE when it was on its way to us as a large category 3 - meaning sustained winds at 115mph - Thats a big storm.

I remember loading up our car, meeting up with some of our friends and getting on to I40 - the highway leading out of Wilmington - heading west. We were headed to the mountains were we would stay with some friends we had there.
I40 was like a parking lot - with everyone else doing the same thing as us, getting out of Frans path! I had just started 7th grade, and this of course was just an added bonus to be getting out of school - which had just started a few weeks earlier. An added vacay in the mountains with friends! It was exciting and kind of scary at the same time.
I'm not sure how long we staid, but I think it was something like a week or so. After the storm, we couldn't get back home b/c most of the roads and highways into Wilmington were all flooded and impassable.
My grandparents place was flooded and they had to be evacuated by boat from a friend. They didn't live in a flood zone, or had ever needed to evacuate in the past.
But Fran did it - she came into their home pushing them out. My Papa lost more than just a home, he was a turkey farmer and grew crops as well - all lost. They were saved yes, and no harm done but they left behind all their possessions and house they had called home for over 45years. The house that my Papa built, the house my mother grew up in. A home full of memories and love. They were able to gut and re-do their home, and my grandma still lives there today, but it left lasting impressions on us all.
As Irene was making her way up the eastern coast and her size was maintaining - staying HUGE! - and her speed was slow and steady, I won't lie, I was a little concerned. Look at how BIG this storm was! It covers the Whole east coast! You can't even see New England.

Do I think the media over hyped this storm and the severity of it? Yes.
Do I think evacuating all the thousands of people that were in the path of this storm a good idea? Yes.
However, I whole heatedly believe that it was by Gods grace that this wasn't as bad as it could have been. That it was Him who dissolved it and lessening the impact it had on New York.
He created it, He can also dissolve it - and I'm very thankful He did!
As a last note, I'd like to remember some of our friends who live in Jersey City and whos apt did flood, and my friends back home in NC who have property on the beach and had damage. I don't want to down play how their lives have been effected by this storm.
Genesis 1:1
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters.
And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the water.
