Christmas Calendars

Growing up my great aunt always sent us a Christmas Calendar.  Each day on the calendar was normally filled with a little pieces of a musically shaped instrument made out of chocolate. Each day starting, on December 1st, we would open the appropriate day and enjoy the chocolaty goodness - and what kid doesn't like sweets, especially during the holidays?!

We had other types of calendars that mom would put out with all the other Christmas decorations, ones that we would hang, and were made of fabric - my mothers family is very crafty, and enjoys  making all kinds of beautiful hand crafted things, like quilts, clothes, and advent calendars.

Two years ago, my mother sent us a felt hanging that is the journey of Mary and Joseph to the stable. Each day you move them one spot closer to being to their destination, and of course there are 25 spots to move them. We did that one last year, as Kaia was old enough to move the piece each day.

This year, the girls received a gift in the mail on the 1st of December from my grandmother - ie. their great grandmother - of a gingerbread themed calendar! Kaia was so excited to do it, and seeing as my grandmother filled a few of the days with little mini candy canes she was extra excited. She made this - of course - here are a few pictures to brag about her handy work, and show off a little one of our Christmas traditions.

I'd love to hear from you, what are some of your favorite family Christmas traditions? What special things do you do during the month of December, or did you do growing up? I'd love to hear about!

  1. That's precious!! I loved out advent calenders. Those were so much fun. :) I've missed being a part of those the past several years since I haven't lived at home over the Holiday season. New tradition starts......NOW!!! :)
